Christoph Willibald Gluck

Iphigénie en Tauride

Introduction at 5.20 PM

Iphigénie was saved from being sacrificed – but at what price! Isolated, she survives on a foreign island entrusted with a terrible task: she must kill any stranger seeking refuge after being shipwrecked. In her dreams, the bloody demise of her family haunts her. She does not know that her brother Orestes has escaped the killings. After many years, they meet again, but the uprooted siblings fail to recognise each other. Now she is to perform the sacrifice she herself escaped on Orestes. "Iphigénie en Tauride" is Gluck’s most mature reform opera; all his reform ideas were implemented here in their full consequence. With this work, Gluck opened the gates to modern music drama, turning the myth into an ardent plea for the values of humanity. The opera "Iphigénie en Tauride" had its last new production at the Hamburg State Opera in 1945; the current production has been in its repertoire since the 2009/09 season.
