Gaetano Donizetti

Lucia di Lammermoor

Introduction at 6.50 PM

Intrigues destroy the love of the Scottish noblewoman Lucia for Edgardo of Ravenswood: while he is in France, Lucia’s brother Enrico takes advantage of his archenemy’s absence to force Lucia into a marriage advantageous to himself. Forged letters are to convince Lucia of Edgardo’s betrayal, and finally she agrees to marry Arturo. No sooner has she signed the marriage contract than Edgardo appears…
Donizetti’s work is one of the most beautiful "bel canto" operas ever written. Especially Lucia’s mad scene has enjoyed lasting fame – it is still considered one of the greatest challenges for coloratura sopranos today.
