Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Die Entführung aus dem Serail (The Abduction from the Seraglio)

“This is where I am to see her?” Belmonte can hardly believe it: he has arrived at Bassa Selim’s palace. There his fiancée Konstanze, who was abducted by pirates, is said to be kept as a slave. While Belmonte tries to find her, Konstanze must fend off Bassa Selim’s advances: tomorrow she is to love him. Konstanze, however, vows to remain steadfast and prepares herself for “Martern aller Arten” – all manners of torture. In the end, however, everything turns out quite differently – and that also applies to the opera itself: at first glance, Die Entführung aus dem Serail is a “Turkish opera”, a genre highly popular in Vienna in the year of its premiere, 1782. And thus, this Abduction is also a spirited oriental fantasy, boasting everything from drums to turbans. Secondly, it is also a German singspiel, rich in cheerful melodies and comedy. Thirdly, the piece turns out a tragedy in disguise: Osmin, a keeper in Bassa Selim’s service, wishes death upon the lovers, but sings an aria expressing all his desperation about his loneliness. The opera hinges upon the scenes in which Konstanze and Belmonte wait to be tortured and executed. And thus, this opera about Spaniards singing in German in Turkey ultimately gives testimony, regardless of fashions and centuries: testimony to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s genius.
