Giuseppe Verdi

Messa da Requiem

Introduction at 6.50 pm

Libera me. Save me. Liberate me, Lord, from eternal death. The individual wails, faced with the balance of his life. Abysses of nothingness. Verdi’s “greatest opera” confronts mankind with itself and its fate – a borderline experience, for the individual is faced with absoluteness in the form of death. A musical theatre realist, Verdi’s reality was an artful invention; depicting the horrors of the Last Judgment in “Dies irae” and offering hopeful entreaties in “Libera me”, which, contrary to liturgical convention, completes his mass for the dead. Catharsis. Salvation. Resurrection. The individual becomes one with the community, proclaiming: Requiem aeternam. Lord God, grant them eternal rest, and may eternal light shine upon them.
