Questions and Answers on the Effects of the Coronavirus on Subscriptions, Tickets and the Performance Schedule

2019/20 Subscriptions

What happens to my subscription tickets to cancelled performances between March 13 and June 28, 2020? What do I need to do?

If you have not yet exercised your right to a refund, of course the value of these tickets remains in your customer account as a credit. This can be used to buy tickets or can be used toward the price of your 2020/21 subscription. The credit can be used to purchase tickets for performances through the end of the 2020/21 season. If you realize now or during the course of the coming season that you will not be able to use the credit, you can request a pay-out of the credit at any time. Kindly use the online reimbursement form provided on our website for this purpose.

I had an elective subscription during the 2019/20 season. Do the same rules apply as for regular subscriptions?

Yes, elective subscription tickets are treated like regular subscription tickets in this case.

I had swapped subscription tickets for one of the cancelled performances and potentially also paid a surcharge to do so. What happens to these swapped tickets and the surcharge?

The swap has been reversed, so that you now have an open voucher ready to swap again. Any surcharge paid during a swap will have been credited back to your account and can be used for future ticket purchases or paid out, if you wish.

I terminated my subscription at the end of the 2019/20 season, or did not renew my season subscription. Can I still use my credit for performances between March 13 and June 28, 2020 during the 2020/21 season, or have it paid out?

Both those options are available to you.

I was a subscriber to the series “Ballet 1” and have been told that individual tickets to the 2020 Nijinsky Gala are being transferred to the 2021 Nijinsky Gala. What is the status of the corresponding subscription tickets?

Subscription tickets are not being transferred to the coming season’s Nijinsky Gala, but are transformed into a credit in the amount of the ticket value. If you continue your subscription during the 2020/21 season, however, the Nijinsky Gala will of course be part of your subscription automatically.

I still have open swap vouchers from the 2019/20 season. Can I use these during the 2020/21 season?

Yes, these swap vouchers may be used for performances through the end of June 2021. If you prefer, we can also transform these into a credit which you can put toward payment of your 2020/21 subscription. Please inform Subscription Services of your decision by September 24, 2020 at the latest.

You had announced that the A and B premieres of “Elektra” would be postponed and subscription tickets for the Premiere Series transferred. Now the substitute dates in early May had to be cancelled as well. What happens to my subscription tickets now?

The production of “Elektra” can now only be shown in a later season. Therefore, the tickets cannot be transferred. You will receive a credit for their value in your customer account.

During the 2019/20 season, you sent me a voucher in honour of my subscription anniversary, which I have not yet been able to use. Is it valid for the coming season as well?

Anniversary vouchers from the 2019/20 season are valid during the coming season as well. We look forward to welcoming you as our guests as soon as we have resumed performances.

Tickets, Cards and Vouchers

I had purchased tickets to the cancelled performances from March 13 to June 28, 2020. What do I need to do?

In principle, the State Opera will refund the value of all tickets. Alternatively, you may choose to transfer the value to a voucher or donate the value of the tickets. This, however, requires some information from you. All details about the procedure can be found on our website, where you can also complete an online form directly.

I have a State Opera Card whose validity has been shortened by the cancellation of performances, or I was not able to use all the vouchers from my voucher package “Opera, Ballet & Thalia 2019/20”. Will their validity be extended?

The validity of Family and Youth Cards will be extended through December 31, 2020. You can keep using these Cards. In the case of Opera Cards and VarioCards, we will extend the validity by the period which was cancelled, but at least through December 31, 2020. New Cards with extended expiry dates will be issued and mailed to you. Vouchers from the voucher package “Opera, Ballet & Thalia“ can be used for performances through the end of the 2020/21 season.

I was unable to use a gift voucher which expired between March 13 and August 31, 2020 due to the cancellation of performances. Will its validity be extended?

Yes, you can use your voucher to purchase tickets for the entire 2020/21 season, i.e. through June 27, 2021.

Beginning of the 2020/21 Season and Advance Booking

When does the 2020/21 season begin and when can I buy tickets for it?

We are currently planning to resume performances at the beginning of the season on September 5. This will take place with all due diligence necessary for the safety of our audience and all those involved. For the period until early December, this will mean altered programming, and all events will take place with significantly reduced seating capacity and in accordance with distancing rules. The programme for the three opening productions is already decided; the further schedule through early December will be published on August 7. Our subscribers have the right to submit written priority bookings from now on for all further performances through the beginning of December, as soon as the performance schedule has been sent out in August. General ticket sales for September begin on August 24, and for October and November on September 7. At the State Opera, we hope to be able to implement regular performances, oriented mainly along the plans already published, from December onwards; in the concert sector, from the end of the year onwards. Until further notice, advance bookings will start on a monthly basis, with advance notice of ca. two months. Subscribers will have priority booking rights, beginning a week ahead of these dates. Exact dates and sales methods will be listed on our website and publications. The application procedure for the 2021 Nijinsky Gala will not take place, because tickets for the 2020 Gala are transferred to 2021. Rules on advance bookings for the remaining Ballet Workshops of the 2020/21 season will be announced in due course.

2020/21 Subscriptions

When does my subscription to the State Opera or the Philharmonic State Orchestra begin in the 2020/21 season?

Your subscription has been suspended through the beginning of December, or in the case of a concert subscription, through the end of the year 2020, since we are unfortunately unable to offer you your regular subscription seats due to limited seating capacities. However, subscribers have the possibility to purchase tickets for this period with priority and at a discount. Your subscription starts with the beginning of regular performances, possibly with the number of performances reduced accordingly. You will presumably receive your subscription cards and invoices in October. Scheduled performances which could not be offered will not be counted, of course. The payment due date is postponed to December 1, 2020, or, for payment in instalments, to December 1, 2020, February 1, 2021 and April 1, 2021. Existing credits from 2019/20 will be automatically be used for these payments.

What happens if unrestricted performance activity can only resume at a later point in time?

If it turns out that regular performances cannot be implemented in December resp. January, your subscription may start at a later point in time, of which we will inform you with due notice. Payment due dates will also be postponed accordingly. Needless to say, you will not be invoiced for additional performances cancelled for this reason.

When can I use my subscription credit or open swap vouchers from the 2019/20 season to purchase tickets for the new season?

As a subscriber, you have special priority booking rights during the 2020/21 season. For the three opening premieres, you may place your orders in writing starting now. The entire programme through early December will be sent to you automatically by mail after August 7, so that you can exercise your right to priority booking in writing. For the remaining season after December 6, you will be able to purchase priority tickets one week before tickets go on sale to the general public. These ticket sales will presumably take place in monthly increments, with advance notice of about two months.

Which rules apply to me, and which advantages do I have as a subscriber during these advance priority booking periods?

Until December 5, subscribers can purchase one ticket per subscription seat per opera and ballet performance at a 30% discount. The same applies to concerts performed through Christmas. At the State Opera, this is limited to seating categories 1 through 7, for which subscriptions are usually offered. This also applies to the use of swap vouchers still open from the 2019/20 season. Any credits resulting from these decisions can either be paid out or kept on your account as a credit. Furthermore, the purchase of extra tickets to your subscription events is possible at a discount of 10%. Subscribers to the premiere series have priority for A and B premieres, concert and combination subscribers for the concerts of the Philharmonic State Orchestra. All other orders will be filled according to their date of receipt and availability. In principle, opera, ballet, concert and combination subscribers can also use their priority booking rights for opera and ballet performances and the concerts. As soon as regular performances resume, the rules on swapping and additional tickets stated in our regular terms and conditions apply.

When can I start swapping tickets to my 2020/21 subscription?

You can swap subscription performances of the 2020/21 season as soon as  you have received your subscriber card. You can swap tickets for the performance you wish as soon as the advance booking period for subscribers has begun for that performance. The swapping rules in the subscription terms and conditions for 2020/21 apply.

I ordered an elective subscription “Overture” for the 2020/21 season, which is only valid at the beginning of the season. What happens to this?

Unfortunately we are no longer able to offer this subscription with the performances originally included. However, you have the possibility of putting together a new elective subscription from August 7 onwards, selecting from the new programming between September 5 and December 5, subject to availability. Our Subscription Services will be happy to assist you.

Will there be further changes to the subscription series advertised after their start date?

On the whole, your series will remain the same, according to our current state of planning. However, there may be changes to dates or repertoire in individual cases, of which we will inform you individually.

We hope this answers your most important questions. Of course our Ticket and Subscription Services are available and happy to assist you; please email ticket@staatsoper-hamburg.de or call +49 40 35 68 68  (currently Monday to Friday from 10 am to 2 pm) for all other issues.
