Wednesday 10. Apr. 2019, 7.30 pm | Großes Haus German Premiere
Always the same old story: that mixture of blood, power, dynasty, jealousy, treason and sex. All the themes found in the plays of Shakespeare and Marlowe, whose Edward II served as orientation for this opera, have been stirred by Martin Crimp and George Benjamin into a musical idiom that is hot and cold, passionate and restrained. It is the language chosen by those who throw themselves body and soul into the power game. It is the language on the lips of those dying when they fail at the power game. The social climber Gaveston and the King are in love, and the monarch lets his official duties slide while the Queen is driven into the arms of Mortimer, the King’s competitor. He desires her, and he wants the power he considers defiled by the love between the two men. Gaveston dies, the King dies. The path might be clear for Mortimer, but the child King has observed the game carefully.
