Richard Strauss

Die Frau ohne Schatten

“Not to let fear darken what is glowing, not to bind the wonderful bird’s wings! Courage is the inner light in every fairy-tale, and that is why the Empress is so glowing and courageous – and where she trembles with fear, she flings herself at the strange and mysterious like a swan, with outstretched wings.” Hofmannsthal himself described his “woman without shadow”, the Empress, as having the courage to face the “strange and mysterious”. Together with Strauss, he created a gigantic opera in which “everything simply [seemed] image and fairy-tale” to him – a fairy-tale hovering between a dream-world and the real world, where the fate of two couples is bound together and stylised in an allegory: the search for their own shadow forces them to pass superhuman trials, only to be redeemed by finding compassion for other people’s fate.
