10 years of war. 10 years of odyssey. Darkness. Ulysses returns to his Penelope in the guise of an unkempt ancient beggar. Among all her suitors, only he can span the enormous bow left behind by her missing husband, thus winning her hand. However, his wife fails to recognise him. Only the secret of their marriage bed reunites them and signs her suitors’ death warrants. Fidelity and love win the day in Homer’s epos, ennobling the fate-stricken couple, which is nothing but a ball in the Gods’ game upon earth, in all its tragedy and comedy. The ball is kicked and carried, it soars and plummets – never understanding why. Monteverdi, opera’s visionary of the 16th century, portrayed the figures of the “Odyssey” with full empathy. 2017 sees the 450th anniversary of his birth.
