"Der Ring des Nibelungen" (The Ring Cycle 2018/19)

All Wagner fans can look forward to the season 2018/19: Under the musical direction of General Music Director Kent Nagano, the Hamburg State Opera will present the complete "Der Ring des Nibelungen" by Richard Wagner in the staging of Claus Guth in two performance series from October 30th to December 2nd. Information about the four pieces and the matching subscription can be found here in the overview.

Preliminary Evening: Das Rheingold

The Rhinemaidens are lounging on a huge bed; in the attic, Wotan is tinkering with his model of the world; and from his heating cellar, Alberich tries to wrest power and become the ruler of the world. Director Claus Guth and set designer Christian Schmidt stage the "Preliminary Evening" of Wagner's "Ring" with a healthy dose of humour, but without neglecting the dimensions of the myth.

First Day: Die Walküre

Wotan wants to create a free hero to win back the ring. However, his experiment with the Wälsungen fails: the god is forced to sacrifice Siegmund, and ultimately also his favourite daughter Brünnhilde.

Second Day: Siegfried

The third part of Hamburg's "Ring des Nibelungen", directed by Claus Guth. The second day in Wagner's great tetralogy tells of the young hero Siegfried. He alone is predestined to kill Fafner and retrieve the ring from its cave. When he actually manages this feat, he also kills his stepfather Mime, who had planned to take advantage of him, and sets out to liberate Brünnhilde, Wotan's daughter...
"Siegfried" is the third part of "Der Ring des Nibelungen". In Wotan's model of the world, Siegfried now becomes a pawn. The "most noble hero" forges the sword, kills the dragon and awakens Brünnhilde – but he remains ignorant of his true fate. The successful duo of Claus Guth and Christian Schmidt stages "Siegfried".

Third Day: Götterdämmerung

The state of the world as a whole occupied Richard Wagner when he decided to expand his opera "Siegfrieds Tod", which was later to become "Die Götterdämmerung", thereby turning "Der Ring des Nibelungen" into a tetralogy. It was to be a myth of beginning and ending, an attempt to explain the world, but above all, a fascinating drama.
