Ballets by George Balanchine

John Neumeier dedicates the winter 2018 premiere of the Hamburg Ballet to the legendary New York City Ballet director George Balanchine: "He has been, in a sense, a role model for me – not only because his many years of loyalty to the New York City Ballet are similar to my dedication to Hamburg – but because of his constant ability to renew dance. Firmly rooted in tradition, Balanchine's creativity gave classical ballet contemporary form." The production combines the opulent "Brahms-Schoenberg Quartet" with the comparatively intimate ballet "Liebeslieder Walzer" – to John Neumeier, a rarely-performed "jewel" among Balanchine's choreographies.

Dancers and musicians in period costumes are on stage together. During the first set of eighteen waltzes the four couples, wearing formal evening dress and dancing slippers, dance in interweaving combinations in an intimate ballroom. After a brief lowering of the curtain they dance fourteen waltzes under a starry sky, the women wearing calf-length tulle skirts and toe shoes. They leave the stage; returning in the original costumes, they pause to listen to the final waltz. Within the strict three-quarter beat of music and dance, personal and romantic associations between the couples are implied.
