This opera by Telemann does not exist – but there is an aria whose title might have been taken from a Heinz Erhardt sketch. Perhaps the development of his idiosyncratic, occasionally bizarre musical style was due to the fact that Telemann came from a home where music was not a predominant interest, was forced by his parents to study law and therefore acquired all his musical training by teaching himself. He was music director in Leipzig, Frankfurt and Hamburg, where he also directed the opera and contributed significantly to the revival of the city’s concert life. Many of his operas were premiered in Hamburg, but there is a great number of arias and duets which never found their way into any stage work. This disparate material is now collated in an opera which Telemann never wrote, but whose entire music was composed by him.
