Robert Schumann

Szenen aus Goethes Faust

Introduction at 6.50 pm

While Goethe’s classicism aimed at a whole consisting of particles in accordance with a higher plan, where the illumination of the heart’s reason is heeded and Faust seeks to understand “what holds the world together in its essence”, romanticism cultivated a sense for surprising, illogical turns, delighting in dark, mystical spheres and wandering poetic landscapes. Goethe considered romanticism an illness. Schumann had no overall dramaturgical concept with regard to Faust. He even asked: “Why add music to such perfect poetry?” – by which he originally meant only the apotheosis of the ending of Faust II. Only later did he add further “Scenes from Goethe’s Faust”, but their connection remains loose and erratic. Only the blank spaces, the interludes round out the story.
