We go into our workshop to hammer out an operetta: our procedure is practical, artisanal, organized and well-planned. Our tools: old sketches, music and photographs. End of the 19th century. Vienna rather than Berlin, perhaps Paris. Our material: feelings (mendacious, but real), longing (unrealistic, but full of hope), plans (conniving, but clumsy), attitude (ridiculous, but laced with courage), politics (only measurable in traces, but existent). No high culture, more likely a factory owner from Berlin and the servants (only the clever ones). Not a world, rather a demi-monde. Slapstick, accidents. We examine the statics, for the old foundations will no longer do the job. The construction site is of our times. Will this hold up? We have the courage to let things collapse, on purpose and with a plan. We’ll see what remains in ugliness or perishes in beauty. And everything comes with dazzling music, of course.
