Reaching out to Hamburg‘s citizens, making classical music accessible – where better to pursue these goals than on a balmy summer night on Hamburg’s Rathausmarkt. The great open-air concert attracted 10,000 visitors last year and after only two repetitions has become a fixed part of the Philharmonic Academy with which Kent Nagano and the Philharmonic State Orchestra end the summer break in late August, setting the tone for the new concert and opera season. In content, this year’s programme is inspired by Hamburg’s, and specifically the Philharmonic’s own musical tradition, in keeping with the original concept of the Academy Concerts: Johannes Brahms can be found on the programme next to Piotr Tchaikovsky, who heard the Philharmonic Orchestra perform two of his works in Hamburg at the end of the 19th century. His popular Piano Concerto No. 1 with its fanfare-like beginning and Brahms’ Symphony No. 3 will transform the Rathausmarkt into a very special concert hall under an open sky.

Venue: Rathausmarkt, 20095 Hamburg
