Modest Mussorgsky’s "Pictures at an Exhibition" is considered a milestone of programme music and is one of the most frequently-performed works in classical music literature. During the course of this season, the Philharmonic Orchestra presents the work, which was originally conceived as a piano solo piece, in various versions, including a chamber music one and one arranged for a family concert. At the main auditorium of the Elbphilharmonie, the orchestrated version – by Maurice Ravel – also features a Serenade by Johannes Brahms and a world premiere: a Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra by the young Canadian composer Matthew Ricketts. The clarinet part will be played by Rupert Wachter, one of the Philharmonic Orchestra’s own musicians: the principal clarinettist of the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra of many years is deeply familiar with contemporary repertoire.
