Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg

In a Special Concert, Kent Nagano and the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra honour the great Ludwig van Beethoven, whose 250th birthday on December 17, 2020 should not be forgotten amidst the current restrictions on musical life. As a special guest, the Philharmonic has invited the South African soprano Pretty Yende, an artist sought-after throughout the world. She performs Beethoven’s concert aria, which is bookended by his overture to the play Coriolan, composed in 1807, and the Second Symphony, written from 1801 onwards – the time when Beethoven’s incipient deafness was becoming apparent. Musically, the composer reacted with an outpouring of life-affirming hope (for a cure), and with his much-quoted, famous statement: “I shall seize fate by the throat; it shall never bend me completely to its will.” For another quarter-century, Ludwig van Beethoven continued to compose trail-blazing music, resisting highly adverse circumstances. We thank the great artist from our hearts, and celebrate his birthday!

Please note: due to the current situation, this concert will take place without an interval and will last approximately 70 minutes. The number of visitors will be reduced to approximately one third of the hall’s capacity.
