Gold!

age 5 and up

Jacob lives with his parents under the roots of a tree, for they are poor. From there they can see the glittering of the stars at night. One day Jacob catches a fish who can speak, and the fish offers to fulfill three of his wishes in exchange for its life. They make a pact, and the fish is allowed to swim on in freedom. But how free is the sea when one is bound by a promise? “Please, dear fish in the sea. What I wish for, you shall give me.” And when has one wished for enough? Will Jacob and his parents become happy?

Every wish that is fulfilled increases demand, and as in the fairytale, the fish-catcher turns into the servant of other people’s wishes. Thus, Jacob, who needs the love and attention of his parents, wishes for ever more property, riches and luxury on their behalf, until the fish is finally exhausted. What remains for Jacob?

Gold by Leonard Evers tells the story of the fisher and his wife not only as a tale of wishful thinking and having, about greed and power (abuse), but also as a story of growing up and becoming independent. In the figure of Jacob, the son of the fisher and his wife, he creates an access point for young viewers. A tenor, a percussionist and an actor recount the story, including the audience in the events as they unfold.
