Performances of this tremendous mass, which Beethoven composed at the same time he was writing his Ninth Symphony, tend to exert a remarkable lure while also taking listeners aback. "From the heart – may it return to the heart" – these are the words he inscribed above his "Missa". He was convinced that this was his "greatest work" and "the most successful product of my mind". Many of his contemporaries, however, already felt different, surmising that "the master may no longer have understood himself – may no longer have been strong enough…" Yet perhaps the cause of the irritation is that Beethoven comes up against a boundary here, in his will to portray the "unfathomable depth" of life and make it palpable!

One hour before the concert, dramaturge Dieter Rexroth will give a pre-concert talk (in german).
