7th Philharmonic Concert

Kent Nagano

Anton Bruckner: Symphony No. 5 B flat major WAB 105

Kent Nagano
Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg

Introduction 60 minutes before the start of the event

"When the strings begin the chorale melody in the Adagio of Bruckner's Fifth, goose bumps are inevitable for me. This melody has accompanied me for years and I am full of anticipation to play the symphony myself for the first time." Not only double bass player Felix von Werder is looking forward to this concert. Anton Bruckner's Fifth Symphony is, after all, one of the absolute great works in music history. It is not only its length of around 80 minutes that makes it so, but also the status that it gained in the 20th century - after it had overcome many problematic interventions by foreign hands and could be experienced in its authentic version. Did Bruckner, who himself spoke of his "fantastic" symphony, succeed for the first time since Beethoven's Ninth in writing a final movement towards which everything really converges, which condenses what has been heard before and, as it were, provides the "resolution" of all the conflicts that had arisen before? Be that as it may - the sheer force of this music certainly overwhelms.
