"Awake, calls the voice to us / Of the watchman high up in the tower; / Awake, you city of Jerusalem. / Midnight the hour is named; / They call to us with bright voices…" (from the Cantata BWV 140). Closing the old year, general music director Kent Nagano once again follows a clear programmatic line, presenting festive music by J. S. Bach, Anton Bruckner and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as well as Samuel Barber’s conciliatory Adagio for Strings – a chance for contemplation, but also for taking stock and looking ahead.
