The 2023 International Hamburg Music Festival is dedicated to love. For its opening, General Music Director Kent Nagano and the Philharmonic State Orchestra present Beethoven’s Eighth Symphony, a masterwork of musical humour and also notable – for Beethoven – for an unusually gentle tone. During the composition process, Beethoven wrote a beautiful love letter to a woman whose identity has not been resolved to this day: “While still in bed, thoughts thrust their way towards you, my immortal beloved. Yes, I have resolved to stray far afield until I can fly into your arms.” That’s what Beethoven in love sounded like. His Eighth is followed by a work commissioned by the Philharmonic State Orchestra from the American composer Sean Shepherd for cello, youth chorus and orchestra, setting a text by the writer and poet Ulla Hahn from Hamburg.
