Ariadne auf Naxos

A nouveau-riche Viennese is planning a performance of the tragedy “Ariadne auf Naxos”, which he has commissioned as part of a grand party he is planning at his home. As an encore, however, the patron of the arts has the dance-master rehearse the comedy “Zerbinetta und ihre vier Liebhaber”. When the uneducated music lover learns that “Ariadne” is set on a desert island, he decides to have both pieces performed simultaneously. The seductive Zerbinetta, however, hatches an improvisational plan of her own to continuously interrupt the performance of Ariadne’s story, which is marked by profound melancholy and a longing for death, with grotesque and amusing interludes – until the god Bacchus decides to lovingly cheer up the long-suffering Ariadne.
