10...9...8...7...6...5...4...3...2...1 - Rocket launch! The world is getting smaller, people lighter and lighter, they are literally floating, just flying through the air. Prepare for landing. Turbulence, please hold on! Boom, crash, squeak. The astronomers tumble out of the rocket and land on dusty grey ground. It's moonlike here. Incredibly moonlike. Andrew Norman's opera is a space adventure inspired by the first science fiction film ever made. And in fact the filmmaker himself is in it: Georges Méliès accompanies the astronomers to record their journey to the moon with his camera. But what they would find 384,400 km from Earth they would never have dared to dream of. Incomprehensible sounds resound between dust and craters: a e i I o u a e i I o ... Do people live here?
